Former congressman Denis Castro Bobadilla says Honduras lacks a coherent foreign policy on migration and faults the government for failing to pursue mechanisms that could extend TPS (Temporary Protected Status) for Honduran migrants in the United States.

Honduras has received over $8 billion in family remittances so far in 2026, bolstering international reserves and macroeconomic stability, though an economist warns that dependence on these flows leaves the economy vulnerable to shifts in migration policy or conditions for Hondurans abroad.

Analysts say Honduras's failure to secure a TPS extension for its 55,000 beneficiaries—in contrast to El Salvador's success in keeping over 170,000 protected—reflects weak diplomatic engagement and reliance on formal letters rather than high-level negotiations with the Trump administration.

A law exempting returned Honduran migrants from import duties on household goods, tools, and vehicles remains unapplied because Customs has not issued the required implementing regulations.

Honduras's ambassador to Washington will meet a U.S. Department of Homeland Security official on September 3 to propose alternatives for TPS beneficiaries facing expiration, including legal aid, temporary work authorizations, and orderly returns for those unable to regularize their status.

Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero plans to meet the International Organization for Migration's global representative to discuss deportations from the US, rising political asylum claims in Honduras, and other migration concerns affecting the country.
