Tegucigalpa Water

Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela will extend their water-rationing cycle from 9 to 12 days starting September 20 due to severely depleted reservoirs; Los Laureles dam is at 26.74% capacity and La Concepción at 25.33% amid extreme drought conditions.

The two largest reservoirs serving Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela have fallen to 27.96% and 25.93% capacity respectively, pushing them toward a critical level, and water will be delivered only every 12 days despite recent rains.

As Tegucigalpa's water crisis deepens, the municipal government is buying over 2.4 million gallons from private wells to distribute via tanker truck, but experts warn that untreated well water risks gastrointestinal illness and urge chemical and bacterial testing before consumption.

Congress authorized Tegucigalpa's city government to issue $500 million in municipal bonds to restructure inherited debt, freeing about 60 million lempiras per month for water infrastructure and drought relief in the capital.

Tegucigalpa's two main reservoirs—La Concepción at 29.85% capacity and Los Laureles at 37.56%—remain at critically low levels due to lack of rainfall, prompting authorities to consider raising the alert level and pursue recovery of 11 wells to bolster water supply.

Low rainfall in Lepaterique's highlands has reduced water flowing into Los Laureles reservoir to 32.4% capacity, threatening Tegucigalpa's water supply as the Guacerique River—which feeds about 25% of the capital's demand—sees diminished flows.

La Concepción reservoir, a key water source for Tegucigalpa, has fallen to 25.93% of capacity amid drought conditions, raising concerns about the city's water supply.
