Reservoir Levels

Tegucigalpa's municipal government is evaluating a reduction in the capital's water rationing from 12 days to 9 days as reservoir levels gradually improve, though the plan depends on sustained rainfall in coming weeks.

The Los Laureles and La Concepción dams that supply Tegucigalpa hold just 27.48% and 24.67% of capacity respectively as of September 24, keeping water rationing in effect across the capital with service cycles reaching up to 12 days.

The Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs that supply Tegucigalpa are at 26.74% and 25.33% capacity respectively, just above the 25% critical threshold, with water rationing potentially extending from 9 to 12 days if levels drop further.

Tegucigalpa's La Concepción reservoir stood at 25.49% capacity — just 0.49 percentage points above the critical threshold — while Los Laureles held 27.09%, as reserves continue to fall, water utility UMAPS officials warn.

Tegucigalpa's water reservoirs are falling due to drought and El Niño effects; the city plans to extend water rationing from nine to twelve days if La Concepción dam drops to 20% capacity, while rehabbing wells and pushing ahead on a new dam project.

Tegucigalpa's two main reservoirs—Los Laureles at 28.64% and La Concepción at 26.24% capacity—remain critically low, with recent light rainfall insufficient to replenish supplies and authorities warning conditions could worsen after mid-September without sustained precipitation.

UMAPS, which supplies Tegucigalpa, is monitoring reservoir levels at 28.6% and 26.2% capacity and may expand water rationing over the coming days depending on rainfall and how quickly reserves continue to drop.

Los Laureles reservoir sits at just 32.6% capacity and could run dry by early October without September rain, while La Concepción holds enough water only until mid-to-late December, with rationing already in effect every nine days.

Tegucigalpa's two main reservoirs—La Concepción at 29.85% capacity and Los Laureles at 37.56%—remain at critically low levels due to lack of rainfall, prompting authorities to consider raising the alert level and pursue recovery of 11 wells to bolster water supply.

Low rainfall in Lepaterique's highlands has reduced water flowing into Los Laureles reservoir to 32.4% capacity, threatening Tegucigalpa's water supply as the Guacerique River—which feeds about 25% of the capital's demand—sees diminished flows.

Tegucigalpa may extend water rationing cycles from seven to nine days starting August 1 as the Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs sit at 40% and 33% capacity, with supplies projected to last only until August 22.

Tegucigalpa faces critical water shortages as reservoir levels risk falling to 15–20% capacity if rains do not increase by late August, forcing many families to ration supplies and rely on water trucks while authorities warn of health risks from prolonged storage.

The two main reservoirs supplying Tegucigalpa, Los Laureles and La Concepción, have fallen to 41.3% and 39% capacity respectively, prompting authorities to maintain a high-risk water alert and urge residents to conserve.

The Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs serving Tegucigalpa hold only 36.6% and 42.2% of their respective capacities, maintaining a high-risk water alert for the capital as authorities urge rational use.

Tegucigalpa's mayor warned that the capital's water shortage will persist as reservoirs remain critically low — La Concepción at 42% and Los Laureles at 33% — with relief not expected until a new dam, set to serve 350,000 people, is completed in early 2028.

Despite recent rains, Tegucigalpa will maintain water service every 12 days because reservoir levels remain below 50% capacity; authorities say rationing could ease to 9 days if rainfall continues and dams reach safe levels.

A tropical wave will break dry conditions across Honduras on Wednesday with scattered to moderate showers, heavier rainfall expected in the south, southwest, center, and east, while capital-area reservoirs continue declining despite the incoming moisture.

Tegucigalpa's mayor Juan Diego Zelaya declared a red alert as the capital's two main reservoirs dropped to critical levels—Los Laureles at 36% and Concepción at 29%—forcing water rationing to nine-day cycles and threatening food security and health across the region.
