A Fosdeh economist argues that measures now being negotiated to stabilize Honduras's state electric utility must become permanent policy to prevent future administrations from reversing reforms, as has happened repeatedly.

The state power utility is installing a 30-megawatt transformer at the Santa Rosa de Copán substation (over 50 million lempiras, roughly $2 million) and building a 5-kilometer transmission line to reduce low-voltage problems affecting thousands of customers across Copán, Lempira, and Ocotepeque.

Economists say Honduras should revise its monetary program to counter inflation driven by fuel-price increases, and restructure the state power utility ENEE to reduce losses, cut political interference, and stabilize the electricity system.
