President Nasry Asfura asked the US to grant Honduran TPS holders time to prepare for their return, after Washington rejected Honduras's request for a transition extension; about 55,000 Hondurans are affected by the program's end.

Honduras's ambassador to Washington will meet a U.S. Department of Homeland Security official on September 3 to propose alternatives for TPS beneficiaries facing expiration, including legal aid, temporary work authorizations, and orderly returns for those unable to regularize their status.

A US immigration appeals ruling means Hondurans with TPS, DACA, or pending asylum who leave the US — even with an authorized travel permit — could face a three- to ten-year bar on re-entry if they accumulated over 180 days of unlawful presence, advocates warn.

A federal judge in Boston on July 21 suspended new restrictions on work authorization for asylum seekers and some TPS beneficiaries, though Honduras's TPS cancellation remains in effect.

With Honduras's TPS formally ended and the U.S. Supreme Court removing the last legal obstacles in June, Hondurans who did not secure another immigration status have lost work authorization and risk deportation, while the roughly 21,000 who obtained permanent residency by April 2025 remain protected.
