San Pedro Sula generates roughly 1,100 tons of solid waste daily, and a breakdown in trash collection is allowing much of it to reach the Chamelecón, Piedras, Bermejo, and Blanco rivers and stormwater canals, raising flood and public-health risks as the rainy season continues.

Authorities discovered bags of medical waste, including contaminated needles and bioinfectious material, improperly mixed with regular garbage at the municipal crematorium in Tegucigalpa, exposing workers and waste collectors to disease transmission risks; the municipality says clinics and facilities violating protocols are responsible.

Tegucigalpa's municipal government collected and disposed of 194,674 tons of solid waste between January and July 2026, averaging about 1,046 tons daily through ongoing cleanup operations across the capital.

Environment Minister Juan Carlos Ramos is pushing Congress to approve a solid-waste law that has cleared first debate, saying it would unlock international funding for sanitary landfills and improve trash collection across Honduras's 298 municipalities.

The Tegucigalpa municipal government has reclaimed about 11 public areas—including the Cerrito de la Felicidad and plaza Isy Obed Murillo—that were abandoned and used for illegal dumping, adding lighting and police patrols while calling on residents to keep the spaces clean.
