Honduras's main port halted ship delays since March and swung from 862 million lempiras in losses in 2025 to 423 million lempiras in profits in 2026, with plans to invest over $400 million in yard expansion, new cranes, and modernization at Puerto Cortés and the southern port of Henecán.

Honduras National Port Authority signed agreements with regional operator OPC and specialized-terminal firm Logra to boost Puerto Cortés capacity to 1.4 million TEU annually and modernize bulk terminals with 621 million lempiras (about $25 million) in investment.

The National Port Authority is investing over $20 million to expand the solid bulk terminal at Puerto Cortés, aiming to handle larger vessels, reduce logistics costs, and increase daily ship operations capacity as part of a broader port modernization program exceeding $100 million.

The National Logistics Council is studying a new bypass road and expanded access routes to Puerto Cortés as the port prepares to nearly double its container capacity from 750,000 to 1.5 million TEU annually.

Officials say Puerto Cortés, which handles roughly 90% of Honduras's exports, could nearly triple its container throughput to 3 million annually with new wharf construction and land reclamation, bolstering the country's regional logistics position.
