Honduras is executing a $624 million modernization of Puerto Cortés, expanding docks 4 and 5, adding container cranes, and acquiring specialized equipment to boost capacity and efficiency at the country's main Caribbean logistics hub.

The National Logistics Council is studying a new bypass road and expanded access routes to Puerto Cortés as the port prepares to nearly double its container capacity from 750,000 to 1.5 million TEU annually.

Officials say Puerto Cortés, which handles roughly 90% of Honduras's exports, could nearly triple its container throughput to 3 million annually with new wharf construction and land reclamation, bolstering the country's regional logistics position.

Honduras's main port expects to handle nearly 900,000 containers in 2026, underscoring its strategic importance to national and regional trade.

The National Logistics Council and National Investment Council signed an agreement under President Nasry Asfura's administration to attract foreign and domestic investment in logistics, trade, and industry, with a goal of creating more than 100,000 formal jobs, backed in part by a 600-million-lempira (about $24 million) expansion of Puerto Cortés's bulk terminal.

Honduras is investing in new highway access and X-ray scanning equipment at Puerto Cortés to speed cargo handling, reduce truck wait times, and strengthen the port's competitiveness amid regional competition.
