Immunization

Honduras's Health Ministry trained medical, nursing, pharmacy, and laboratory professionals to identify and act on vaccination opportunities, addressing declining immunization rates driven by vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and falling clinic attendance since 2017.

Congressman Carlos Umaña, a physician, will introduce a motion to make vaccinations mandatory in Honduras, citing falling immunization rates below 70% and rising cases of whooping cough, measles, and dengue.

Honduran health authorities expressed concern that more pets are being vaccinated than children in Honduras, reiterating that protecting the population, especially minors, must be the priority.

Honduras has one million measles vaccine doses available at over 1,800 health centers nationwide, but about 90,000 children under five remain unprotected, as authorities work to boost immunization rates amid a confirmed outbreak.

Starting August 1, Honduras will shift vaccination records from paper to a digital national system, allowing health authorities to track immunizations in real time, identify people needing doses, and improve disease prevention planning.

The Health Ministry is urging Hondurans to visit their nearest vaccination site on May 30–31 to complete their immunization schedules, reminding them to bring their vaccination cards.
