The number of Hondurans seeking refuge or asylum abroad reached 262,913 people in 2025, with the UN refugee agency citing crime-related violence, extortion, climate impacts, and economic collapse as drivers, while Honduras's human-rights ombudsman warns that early intervention could have kept many in the country.

An estimated 423,845 Hondurans have been internally displaced by criminal threats, extortion, and violence, while over 262,000 others sought international protection abroad by end-2025, with climate change and economic vulnerability compounding the pressures driving flight.

Coastal erosion in Cedeño, on the Gulf of Fonseca, has pushed back the shoreline 135 meters since 2004, destroying homes and livelihoods and driving young people to migrate abroad in search of economic survival.
