Cloud Seeding

Agriculture Minister Moisés Molina says three cloud-seeding flights have shown favorable results in drought-prone areas, with half the planned flights still to come and officials evaluating whether to expand the program, which is partly funded by sugar and vegetable producers.

Honduras has completed 10 of 20 planned flights to seed clouds with silver iodide across eight drought-stricken departments, covering 1.8 to 2.3 million hectares, as officials evaluate whether the intervention is increasing rainfall.

Honduras has completed eight cloud-seeding flights using silver iodide in drought-stricken regions including the Dry Corridor, with twelve operations remaining pending suitable atmospheric conditions; farmers report heavier rainfall after roughly ten months of drought.

An environmental leader in El Salvador has called for dialogue with Honduras and Central American coordination to address Honduras's cloud-seeding operations with silver iodide, warning that weather modification could alter rainfall patterns across the region.

A plane owned by a company whose proprietor was implicated in drug trafficking links to former presidents Juan Orlando and Juan Antonio Hernández in the Pandora case is participating in the government's cloud-seeding operation to fight drought in Honduras's dry corridor, at a cost of over 16 million lempiras (about $640,000).

Honduras completed its first cloud-seeding operation on September 26, dispersing silver iodide from an aircraft over moisture-laden clouds to stimulate rainfall in drought-affected areas, with about 20 additional flights planned over the next two to three months.

Rain fell across several parts of the capital following the start of cloud-seeding operations, according to Radio América Honduras.

The government is beginning a three-month cloud-seeding operation using silver iodide to stimulate rainfall in agricultural and water-supply areas, with a Mexican company conducting up to 20 flights at a cost of roughly $600,000–$700,000.

Agriculture Minister Moisés Molina said Honduras is ready to begin cloud-seeding operations across 1.8–2 million hectares, mainly in the drought-stricken Dry Corridor, once suitable cloud formations appear and remaining equipment arrives.

Over 37,000 families in 37 drought-affected municipalities have received humanitarian assistance, and the government is preparing well-drilling, livestock feed, agricultural incentives, and cloud-seeding as additional measures while monitoring the autumn harvest season.

Agriculture Minister Moisés Molina announced a cloud-seeding program using 2,000 liters of silver iodide across 20 flights to boost rainfall over roughly two million hectares affected by drought, targeting the dry corridor and reservoirs supplying Tegucigalpa.

The Agriculture Ministry confirmed Honduras will launch an artificial rainfall-stimulation program targeting up to two million hectares affected by drought, with priority given to farmers and families in the Dry Corridor region.

The Agriculture Ministry is evaluating silver iodide cloud seeding with private companies and international partners to stimulate rainfall across drought-affected areas including the dry corridor and Tegucigalpa over the next two months.

Honduras begins cloud-seeding flights on Saturday from Tegucigalpa's Toncontín airport between 3 and 6 p.m. to stimulate rainfall in drought-affected regions, including the Francisco Morazán reservoir and the dry corridor near San Marcos de Colón in Choluteca.
