A Libre party congresswoman, Dunia Jiménez, has introduced legislation to permanently halve the Siglo XXI municipal vehicle tax in San Pedro Sula, arguing that rising living costs and multi-vehicle households — where families can pay up to L15,000 (about $600) a year — have overburdened working-class budgets.

Vehicle registration fees in Cortés department, including San Pedro Sula, are the highest in northern Honduras, driven by municipal rates that vary significantly by engine size and municipality.

Honduras's two-month vehicle tax amnesty, which waives penalties and interest on unpaid annual vehicle fees through 2025, expires today; over 45,000 owners have already taken advantage, generating L51.8 million in collections.

After days of protests, El Progreso's municipal government nullified a planned near-300% increase in the vehicle tax, reverting to 2025 rates effective July 21, and will credit overpayments made between July 1–19 to other municipal fees.
