Traffic Fines

More than 200,000 people owe the National Road and Transport Authority over 700 million lempiras (about $28 million) in unpaid traffic fines, according to the agency's director Lenin Morell.

Honduras's National Directorate of Roads and Transport announced it will prevent over 325,000 drivers with unpaid traffic fines from accessing public services, including police clearances and gun permits, and is considering reporting them to the national credit-risk registry.

Honduras's traffic authority says current penalties—including a 600-lempira fine for speeding—have lost their deterrent effect and proposes expanding technological speed enforcement, breath-alcohol testing, and stricter sanctions to reduce road fatalities.

Congress approved a two-month amnesty allowing vehicle and motorcycle owners to settle outstanding tax debts without paying accumulated penalties, fines, or interest, covering obligations from 2025 and earlier years.
