School Meals

The government and FAO will spend $15 million through 2029 to decentralize school-meal administration and source fresh food from local farmers in 30 vulnerable municipalities, aiming to strengthen nutrition for 1.2 million students and create markets for small farmers.

Honduras's 2026 Child Congress unanimously approved 18 motions urging the Education and Environment ministries to improve school meals, create accessible facilities for children with disabilities, promote indigenous and Afro-Honduran inclusion, establish safe sports spaces, and implement environmental protections in schools.

The Agriculture Ministry unveiled a 10-year strategy investing $40 million annually to expand irrigation on 60,000 hectares, strengthen school meals for 300,000 children, and boost local farm production amid an El Niño drought affecting 134,000 families across 234 municipalities.

The US Department of Agriculture will provide $40 million over six years to strengthen Honduras's national school-feeding program, benefiting about 96,000 children in 2,000 public schools in remote areas of La Paz and Intibucá departments.
