Government Accountability

The Supreme Court of Accounts reported over a year ago that a failed irrigation project in El Paraíso's Jamastrán Valley squandered more than $8.5 million of a $26.5 million Indian loan due to poor planning and administrative failures, but the Public Ministry has not prosecuted anyone despite receiving audit findings.

Tegucigalpa's municipal government awarded a 93.66 million lempira (about $3.4 million) contract to build an artificial-intelligence unit to handle citizen reports, but 95% of complaints remain unresolved and the virtual assistant cannot answer basic questions about water supply during severe water rationing.

César Chirinos, president of the National Association of Public Employees (Andeph), reported that mid- and lower-level officials are allegedly demanding improper payments, saying the practice inflates public spending and procurement costs, and pledged to provide details directly to President Asfura.
