The village of Coyolito in Francisco Morazán has seen a significant exodus of women who have emigrated to Spain for domestic work and elder care, leaving behind men who now manage households and child-rearing while remittances transform the community's housing and economic conditions.

Darwin Ponce, president of the civil-society group Artículo 19, says the resurgence of migrant caravans reflects widespread frustration over rising inflation and a lack of economic opportunity, worsened by poor coordination between the central bank and the government's fuel and energy price hikes.

Honduras ranked among Spain's top immigrant nationalities in the second quarter of 2026, with 7,600 Hondurans arriving and 2,700 departing during that period, according to Spain's Continuous Population Statistics.

Honduras has only 5,000 doctors but needs 23,000 in the public system, according to the Medical College of Honduras, with low pay, salary arrears, and poor working conditions driving emigration to Germany, Spain, England, and other countries.

Honduras's basic food basket has climbed to 16,700 lempiras (about $670), far exceeding the 12,000–14,000-lempira minimum wage, prompting economist Wilfredo Girón to warn that deteriorating purchasing power will force more Hondurans to emigrate as poverty deepens.

A Consulting HNL survey found that 85.6% of Hondurans view migration as a necessity rather than a choice, citing insecurity, unemployment, debt, and lack of opportunity as the main drivers.

The German Embassy in Honduras will hold a free virtual information session on June 22 for Hondurans interested in relocating and working in Germany, covering financial planning, documentation, family considerations, and choosing a location.
