Coffee businessman Basilio Fuschich said a proposed additional 2.5% US tariff on products from countries with forced labor would, combined with existing tariffs, harm Honduras's exports and give competitors an unfair advantage unless applied uniformly across the region.

The government and private-sector leaders, including Cohep president Anabel Gallardo, have lobbied US officials to prevent tariff increases, warning that higher duties on maquila and coffee exports would cost jobs and drive migration.

The United States will impose tariffs of at least 2.5% on about 60 countries, including Honduras, citing forced labor and child labor in supply chains; the measure threatens Honduran exports of coffee, melons, and lobster, which face existing duties ranging from 10% to 25%.

Honduras is projected to export more than 7 million 100-pound sacks of coffee this season, generating $2.2–2.3 billion in revenue, boosted by strong international prices and demand from the US and Europe, though financing and infrastructure remain key challenges for the sector.

Honduran coffee exports reached 161 destinations in the 2025–2026 harvest, surpassing projections, with the United States buying 2.27 million quintals (about 102,000 metric tons) and accounting for 33.1% of total shipments.

Coffee producer Víctor Barahona projects Honduras's coffee exports will reach $2.5 billion this season.

Honduras expects to earn $2.4 billion from coffee exports by September 30, when the current coffee year ends, with 6.8 million quintals already shipped and 120,000 producers supporting roughly one million jobs across the sector.

Honduras exported 6.66 million bags of coffee worth $2.11 billion from October 2025 through July 1, 2026—a 23% jump in volume and 12% gain in revenue over the same period a year earlier, driven by larger harvests despite lower global prices.

Honduras has exported over 6 million quintals (about 270,000 metric tons) of coffee worth $2.05 billion this season, and with sales contracts already near 6.85 million quintals, officials project final exports could reach 7 million quintals before the September 30 harvest close.

Honduran coffee exporters say all the country's coffee farms are prepared for evaluation under new European Union requirements that ban imports from land cleared of forest, a standard for selling into European markets.

Honduras is nearing $2 billion in foreign-exchange earnings from coffee exports this year, with 6.2 million of 6.8 million contracted quintals already shipped, according to the Coffee Vice Minister.

Honduras has renewed 70,000 acres of coffee plants through a program coordinated by the Agriculture Ministry and the Institute for Honduran Coffee, with officials projecting output will rise to 7 million quintals this harvest from 6.14 million the prior year.

Coffee industry leader Fredy Pastrana warned that Honduras must accelerate compliance with the European Union's deforestation regulation before the new coffee year begins, noting the country is advancing geolocation of farms and market standards to maintain access to a key export market.
