The United States has temporarily halted interviews for immigrant visas (for permanent residence) while consular staff receive training on evaluating applicants, delaying appointments for thousands of Hondurans seeking family reunification or work-based immigration.

Isidro Rodríguez, a Honduran who entered the US on a humanitarian visa in 2015, was deported in June after undergoing open-heart surgery while in ICE custody; he returned to Honduras in a wheelchair and remains in recovery, while his family explores legal options for his return.

More than 19,500 Hondurans were deported home between January and May 2026, a 43% jump from the same period last year, while transit migration through Honduras fell 77% to fewer than 4,300 migrants, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa explained that a denial under section 221(g) is not final and may require additional documents, while a 214(b) denial does reject that specific application but allows a future reapplication.
