The capital's municipal risk office says Tegucigalpa could escalate to red-alert status for drought by late August if rainfall remains low, as main reservoirs serving the city drop to critical levels.

The emergency agency Copeco has placed 75 municipalities under yellow alert and 48 under green alert due to drought conditions worsened by the dry season, with about one million people facing direct effects including crop losses and water shortages.

Tegucigalpa faces critical water shortages as reservoir levels risk falling to 15–20% capacity if rains do not increase by late August, forcing many families to ration supplies and rely on water trucks while authorities warn of health risks from prolonged storage.

Honduras's capital water utility sanctioned seven people for misusing potable water during an ongoing shortage, imposing fines up to 20,000 lempiras (about $800) for excessive use in homes and businesses.

The Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs serving Tegucigalpa hold only 36.6% and 42.2% of their respective capacities, maintaining a high-risk water alert for the capital as authorities urge rational use.
