Tectonic Plates

Honduras registered over 1,600 seismic events from 2023 through July 2026, mostly minor, with concentrations in Cortés, Comayagua, and the Gulf of Fonseca driven by tectonic-plate movement and faults, though none caused reported damage.

Copeco's Early Warning chief says the south and west are Honduras's most seismically vulnerable regions and warns that a major earthquake is "very likely" given the country's position on two tectonic plates.
