Teacher Layoffs

Parents occupied the National School of Music in Tegucigalpa on Friday to protest employee dismissals, citing threats to security and school operations, particularly after guards were laid off.

Honduras's Education Ministry has dismissed roughly 2,500 public school employees nationwide since early July, citing overstaffing; schools have closed, suspended classes, and lost security and maintenance staff, while unions and parents demand reinstatement.

Parents and teachers blocked roads at three public schools in Tegucigalpa on July 6 to protest the dismissal of security guards, teacher shortages, and deteriorating conditions, with classes suspended at some sites.

Students at Instituto Jesús Aguilar Paz have occupied the school indefinitely in protest of staff layoffs at the educational center.
