Stenee

The STENEE electrical workers' union says the International Monetary Fund's evaluation of Honduras should build on the recent power-sector reform law, which the union argues removed legal barriers to needed institutional investment and allowed ENEE to establish internal oversight and a structured loss-reduction plan.

Pending congressional reforms to Honduras's electric sector guarantee that ENEE employees will retain their union affiliation and benefits even after the state utility is restructured into separate generation, distribution, and transmission companies, and explicitly reject any privatization.

The STENEE union is urging ENEE's new management to proceed with a stalled national and international tender for 1,500 megawatts of power, warning that peak demand has already hit 2,205 MW and that workers are prepared to take action if the procurement process is not reactivated.
