The National Congress reconvenes on July 21 with a final debate on proposed reforms to Honduras's electricity law, which President Asfura says are necessary to stabilize the state power company (ENEE), though opposition parties continue to reject the changes.

The president of Honduras's renewable energy association said Friday that private generators have no intention to seize state electricity company ENEE assets and are focused on their own projects within reformed power-sector regulations.

Congress began first-round debate on a 18-article bill to reorganize and strengthen Honduras's power system, which still requires two more votes before final passage.

The Honduran business chamber (CIMEQH) called for a halt to a proposed electric-sector reform, citing risks that the legislation could drive up utility rates and lead to privatization of public power assets.
