Five years after Keyla Martínez died at a police station in La Esperanza, Intibucá, family and friends protested outside the facility demanding justice, as a retrial of the case involving one accused person is underway.

A court completed the evidence phase on September 10 in the trial of Jarol Rolando Perdomo Sarmiento, accused of killing nursing student Keyla Patricia Martínez, who died in police custody in Intibucá in February 2021; the judge will schedule closing arguments after a final site inspection.

A medical examiner testified on the third day of a retrial that nursing student Keyla Martínez, who died in police custody in 2021, died of mechanical asphyxiation, contradicting the accused officer's claim that she took her own life.
