Electric Sector

The Patriotic Solidarity Coalition has called on Congress to strengthen a bipartisan electric-sector reform bill before passage, arguing it must address structural causes of the ENEE crisis—including arrears, technical losses, and governance failures—while guaranteeing state control of the system.

Ronald Panchamé, head of the Libre congressional bloc, announced the party will present a counterproposal to the government's electric-sector reform bill currently under discussion.

Former national power company manager Salomón Ordóñez cautioned that Honduras's largest hydroelectric dam, El Cajón, requires steady funding and emergency spare parts to avoid costly thermal-power substitution, and urged against privatizing generation and transmission.

Central Bank President Roberto Lagos said the IMF agreement does not condition approval of Honduras's electricity-sector reforms, characterizing the Fund as providing accompaniment to the government's own policy vision.

The Latin American Development Bank (CAF) endorsed Honduras's proposed electricity-sector reform, saying it would modernize the energy system, attract foreign investment, and improve service quality while offering support for implementation.
