Domestic Tourism

The government and municipalities are preparing a strategy to promote domestic tourism during Christmas, hoping to repeat the economic success of October's Morazán Week holiday, which drew 1.6 million travelers and generated an estimated 769 million lempiras in spending.

More than 700,000 Hondurans traveled during the Semana Morazánica 2026 holiday, with beach destinations such as Tela, Amapala, and Roatán reporting over 90% hotel occupancy and historical sites like Copán Ruinas also drawing visitors.

Tourism Minister Andrés Ehrler reported that around 250,000 Hondurans began traveling during the Morazán Week holiday, with hotels in the west (Siguatepeque to Copán Ruinas), the north (Tela), and the Bay Islands reporting full occupancy.

Liberal congressman Alex Berríos will request that Tourism Minister Andrés Ehrler report to Congress on why thousands of Hondurans traveled to El Salvador during October holidays instead of vacationing domestically, citing the minister's public defense of tourists' freedom to spend money abroad.

Tourism officials project that about 500,000 Hondurans will travel to domestic destinations during Semana Morazánica (October 5–11), generating over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs and an estimated 600 million lempiras (about $24 million) in economic activity.

Tourism officials project that Honduras's Morazán Week holiday (October 7–10) will attract around 500,000 domestic travelers and generate roughly L600 million (about $24 million) in economic activity across hotels, restaurants, transport, and tour operators.

Honduras's Tourism Ministry is launching a campaign for the October 7–10 Morazánica holiday, projecting over 500,000 travelers and encouraging domestic tourism to keep spending within Honduras rather than abroad, while promoting lesser-known destinations alongside traditional coastal and archaeological sites.

About 45,000 Hondurans crossed into El Salvador during the Morazán holiday period, prompting criticism from a former migration official who questioned the government's domestic tourism strategy and alleged gaps in job creation and public data access.
