Cayos Cochinos

Residents of Cayos Cochinos and Nueva Armenia demonstrated at the Atlántida provincial office in La Ceiba, urging authorities to allow the Spanish television production Supervivientes to remain, saying the show provides seasonal employment and tourism benefits despite environmental and indigenous-rights complaints from activist groups.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said a reality-show production linked to Mexican businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego at Cayos Cochinos in Honduras must comply with environmental protections and indigenous land rights, after Garífuna communities protested their exclusion from the beach.

Garífuna community members set up a protest camp on Cayos Cochinos to oppose the Spanish reality show Supervivientes All Stars, citing damage to marine habitat and hawksbill turtle nesting during critical breeding season, despite the production's legal permits and annual payments exceeding 15 million lempiras.

OFRANEH warned of a new eviction attempt against the Garífuna community of Cayos Cochinos and demanded the government enforce an Inter-American Court ruling recognizing their territorial and collective rights, alleging a private investment firm linked to the Salinas Pliego family is behind the action.

Joseph David Vuelto, 16, disappeared Friday after his fishing boat capsized near Cayos Cochinos in the Caribbean; his companion was rescued, but search efforts have found only his fishing gear.
