Cacao

France, the agricultural research center CATIE, and the French research institute CIRAD have identified coffee, cacao, forest restoration, and biodiversity as areas for potential joint projects and funding in Honduras, building on three decades of scientific collaboration in Central America.

Honduras exported 630 metric tons of fine and aromatic cacao through September 2026, generating $2.8 million in revenue, with most shipments bound for Central America and about 70 processing companies adding value to the crop.

Honduras's Cacao Ecotourism Route (RETCACAOH) connects family-run cacao farms, natural reserves, and tourism parks across the country where visitors can learn chocolate production from harvest to finished product, with the government and farmers aiming to diversify rural incomes through sustainable agritourism.

Honduran coffee, cacao, and cashew-producer organizations completed a July 15–16 workshop in Choluteca on export procedures and EU deforestation regulations, with EU funding and university support to help them meet international market requirements.
