Marathón defeated El Salvador's Alianza 2-1 in the first leg of a Concacaf Champions Cup 2027 playoff, needing only a draw in the return match to advance to the continental tournament.

Daniel Alberto Otero Muñoz, elected president of Honduras's storied Marathon football club in January 2026, faces renewed public scrutiny following a 2024 investigative report that documented his rise from modest means to an estimated 1.3 billion lempiras in assets and over 110 properties linked to municipal contracts in San Pedro Sula.

Concacaf sanctioned Honduran club Marathón with $6,400 (166,400 lempiras) for lighting and internet failures at its Francisco Morazán stadium, fan misconduct, and unauthorized player advertising during a Copa Centroamericana quarterfinal match against Alajuelense on September 10.

Marathón announced it will file a complaint with the National Football Arbitration Court against player Cristian Sacaza, who abandoned training on July 24 without authorization days before the season opens, seeking maximum sporting sanctions and compensation for financial damages.

Marathón ended its contract with striker Bryan Moya by mutual agreement after he was separated from the squad midseason due to disciplinary issues and failed to score in 11 official matches.

Argentinian coach Silvio Rudman, who recently left Boca Juniors, has been hired to lead Marathón of San Pedro Sula after the club's loss in the Clausura final.
