Honduras is seeking a transition period from the U.S. before TPS holders must depart, with a delegation set to meet U.S. officials in early September, while at least 385 deportees arrived this week on three flights to San Pedro Sula.

President Nasry Asfura requested that the United States evaluate each Honduran affected by the suspension of Temporary Protected Status on a case-by-case basis, noting that many have lived, worked, and built families in the US for decades since the program began after Hurricane Mitch 28 years ago.

Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero said the government remains committed to supporting the roughly 55,000 Hondurans with Temporary Protected Status as a federal appeals court reviews the US Department of Homeland Security's termination of the program.

Isidro Rodríguez, a Honduran who entered the US on a humanitarian visa in 2015, was deported in June after undergoing open-heart surgery while in ICE custody; he returned to Honduras in a wheelchair and remains in recovery, while his family explores legal options for his return.
