COHEP's July 2026 regional competitiveness bulletin projects 3.4% economic growth in 2026 backed by remittances, but flags Honduras ranking 95th globally in economic freedom, 119th in innovation among 139 countries, and third worldwide in climate vulnerability.

Honduras's central bank raised its forecast for family remittances to grow 7% in 2026 (to $13.16 billion) and maintained a 3–4% economic growth outlook, though inflation and currency depreciation continue to pressure household purchasing power.

An economist at civic watchdog group ASJ warns that Honduras's rising public debt could approach $25 billion within years without policy changes, and calls for greater investment in infrastructure, ports, education, and energy to drive sustainable growth.

Obed García, an economist at the Association for Justice, says Honduras should use public borrowing to fund infrastructure and productive projects rather than other spending, citing existing road and economic plans and the need to create jobs for 300,000 unemployed people.

Gross domestic product expanded 1.2% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter, the strongest first-quarter growth in recent years and well above the 0.1% recorded in late 2025, signaling moderate economic acceleration.
